John Coate, M.S, CPRW
I have been a career coach and counselor for over 20 years. After starting in the corporate world, I worked as an executive recruiter and then transitioned to career services in higher education – at UCLA and then UC Santa Barbara. I’ve worked with thousands of diverse clients in all areas of career development, and have held leadership and management roles wherever I’ve been. And with a Master of Science degree in Counseling/Career Specialization, a Bachelor of Science in Business, and years of relevant continuous learning, I have been committed to being on the forefront of knowledge and expertise in the field.
I see our careers as being influenced and shaped by the key, interrelated factors of our lives - personal, communal, and environmental. Personal in the sense of how we see ourselves and what our purpose is career-wise. Communal in terms of the influence of significant others in our career issues and decisions – family, peers, community, et al. And environmental being the more concrete, “external” factors we face at a given time, such as the job market, the economy, financial resources, access to opportunities, etc.
I think that each of these factors play a role as we pursue our unique careers. Ideally resulting in a career purpose that is in line with our true self, is beneficial to the community and environment we live in, and that we are compensated for to meet our needs.
